Chasing the Line

It’s official! My first solo show is just around the corner.

What do I mean by Chasing the Line?

It turns out a lot. If you are a metalsmith the first thing you would think is probably to chase metal. A process of adding lines and texture onto the surface of metal with steel punches. I do a lot of repousse work and chasing always follows, allowing for details and textures. Form is given life when I chase with my steel tools.

Chasing Tools

Steel punches that allow me to bring life to my designs.

For the last 14 years I have been chasing the line between being a working artist and motherhood. Searching for quiet moments to be creative even when exhausted. Setting up kid friendly projects for the girls in my studio or racing to meet the bus just when I was finally in the zone- balance has often felt like a myth. Something for other people; not me. So getting to the point where I have not only the opportunity but also enough finished work to have a solo show feels a little surreal.

Misericordia Charcoal and paint on packing paper 2025

Chasing the Line will be full of charcoal drawings, metalwork and even a fiber art piece. The more whooping cranes and snakes I draw, the more I see myself and friends struggling to be good humans in the year 2025. Attempting to be good neighbors and responsible citizens while trying to save the world one bug, bird, tree, recycled product or thrifted item at a time feels like running on a hamster wheel. All we can do is keep trying, make the art, write the books, do the work strive for balance, and chase the line.
